Colleges and a river

I can now happily announce that I've been to Cambridge. Probably nobody else cares but I'm pretty happy about it. It's so easy to find yourself comparing Cambridge with Oxford when you've been to both. But why really? Just because they're the biggest and oldest university cities in England? Probably, but that's just stupid. They are quite similar though and now after I don't feel like I have a favourite either.

I liked Cambridge, just as I liked Oxford. I don't feel like I want to live there, which I do with a lot of places. The reasons behind this is probably because you just see the most touristic places and hordes of people everywhere. And come on, what's up with all the people trying to punt? Just don't do it if you don't know how to. Poor people. The colleges are all stunning but somehow it doesn't feel quite realistic. It's like when I visited the Cotswolds - everything is a bit too perfect. In Cambridge the grass was a bit too green and everything a bit too tidy, not very natural. But then again, I like feeling the presence of knowledge when thinking about how many people have learnt so much in these buildings. I love that about a city like this and like to think of a time when the streets were full of students and not tourists. Because there must have been a time before university cities like these were invaded by curious weirdos with cameras ( I do include myself in this group), right?

We started the day with Fitzwilliam Museum and then continued our walk trying to have a nosy around as many colleges as possible. We managed to get in to Peterhouse and Pembroke College and they were both just wonderful with the classic British college look. Unfortunately a lot of the big ones were closed because of Easter weekend.

I need to go again to see all the big colleges and for a visit to Grantchester Meadows which is supposed to be lovely. And oh -not to forget punting. I'm definitely paying somebody else to do it though. I'm the type of person who would fall in River Cam, I'm 100% sure of it.
